Dinar Daily NEWS Blog – May 24th

Why am I selling my Dinar?

Simple answer: I’m not – I’m buying. I only sell so that we can increase holdings. We keep everything we can afford to. That’s the general concept anyway.

Sometime back we were able to help some folks in a big way with their currency. This was at a time when the dealers were being very harsh with people on their buy-backs and not really passing much of that on to buyers.

We helped. When their advertised buy-back was $500-600 (depending on condition) we were able to get one man $850 x 60 million and helped save his farm. We didn’t make much – but we helped. It was then I realized, if we were gonna’ keep this up, we ought to get registered as a dealer.

We did. We try to offer the best number for those wanting to get out – and the best number we can for those wanting to get in or add more.

Current Sale Price: $995 per million (2014 25k notes – perfect quality – uncirculated)

Political peace “.

“We will brief them on the details of the many meetings so that they can have good sayings, and then we will wait for the honest and patriotic blocs that are precious to form a strong patriarchal government that will give the people their rights,” he said.

The leader of the Sadrist movement Moqtada al-Sadr met with a number of officials in the Iraqi government and heads of blocs and coalitions, including Prime Minister Haider Abadi, and discussed with them the formation of the next government and its program.

Chattels (Dinar Guru) –   165 seats are necessary. Sadr’s Sairoon (54 seats), PM Abadi’s Nasr (42 seats), Hakim’s Hikma (19 seats), VP Allawi’s Wataniya (21 seats) and the KDP (25 seats) and Qarar (13 seats) makes a total of 173 if my math is correct. Can I get a “Bingo!“?  With the Kurds as part of the government we have the best chance to avoid quotas and establish an efficient majority government for legislation without consensus, IMO.  Godspeed the completion of the Iraqi Banking Sector Reform Project!

Sadr meets Hakim to discuss possible governing alliance

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Muqtada al-Sadr, leader of the winning election alliance Sayirun, has met with the prominent Shia leader Ammar al-Hakim, head of the National Hikma (Wisdom) Movement, in Najaf to discuss forming a government.

Both sides say they agree on the need to form a representative government.

“I am thankful to the Iraqi people who voted in the current elections, those who helped reform triumph. [For] even those who abstained from voting, thank you, as they didn’t give their votes to the corrupt,” Sadr told journalists following the meeting.

“God willing, we are looking at a new stage for building in Iraq a democratic, paternal and technocratic government,” Sadr added.

The two leaders have not always been on good terms, according to many sources, with Sadr once saying he would not engage with Hakim politically or share a platform with him prior to the election.

Hakim’s alliance came out as the sixth largest party in the election, even trailing behind the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), with a preliminary result of 22 seats.

Hakim termed the meeting a “valuable opportunity,” where they discussed the election and its results and potential party combinations in government.

“We examined the necessity of forming a government that is national, strong, independent in its political decisions, dependent on the will of the free Iraqi nation, and with a national orientation that transcends components and represents all the sons of the people of Iraq,” Hakim told journalists.

Talk of a possible Sayirun-Hikma alliance marks a good start, Hakim said. Both leaders are open to further talks with any party standing on an anti-corruption, cross-sectarian and cross-ethnic, and pro-reform platform, he added.

He also called on the election commission to seriously examine complaints and allegations of fraud.

“It is clear that the decrease in turnout in elections is a message from the people of Iraq that they want new faces, serious programs and steps to provide the necessary and proper services to the sons of our people,” Hakim added.

Sadr has said he could support incumbent Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi for a second term, owing to similarities in their election pitch.

In a recent pun-heavy tweet, Sadr hinted at potential alliances he wishes to see in an upcoming government.

The KDP, Abadi’s Nasr (Victory) Alliance, Hakim’s Hikma, and some other parties were included in the tweet. It is not clear whether Sadr deliberately omitted Hashd al-Shaabi’s Fatih and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) among others.

Brett McGurk, the US special presidential envoy, met with former Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani and PM Nechirvan Barzani in a bid to influence the shape of the next government.

Meanwhile, Qassem Soleimani, commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp’s (IRGC) extraterritorial Quds Force, is in southern Iraq seeking to assemble a pro-Iran Shia majority government among the divided Shia blocs.

sandyf (Dinar Guru) –   It is a fact that Iraq has for years discussed the project to delete the 3 zeros.  It is a fact that ten years ago that Iraq considered the “Turkey model” for their redenomination.  It is a fact that in April 2012 the Iraqi cabinet postponed the redenomination indefinitely. It is a fact that in 2009 an investigative report was published into redenominations.  It is a fact that the 2009 report concluded that a major contributor to a “successful” redenomination was low inflation.  It is a fact that a redenomination introduces a new national currency and that the previous national currency co-exists in-country for a period of time. It would become an ISO historical currency.  It is a fact that ISO historical currencies are not recognised internationally…

Iraq’s Maliki to engage in more negotiations with Kurds on next govt

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi Vice President Nuri al-Maliki’s coalition intends to continue recent talks with kurdish political representatives regarding the formation of the next Iraqi government, his office said.

Hisham al-Rikabi, director of Maliki’s office, said in statements on Wednesday that the State of the Law coalition will launch a new phase of talks within the next couple of days with Kurdish political forces after a meeting between Maliki and a former Kurdish president, Masud Barzani, head of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, in Baghdad yesterday.

According to Rikabi, “the meeting between the head of the State of the Law Coalition, Nuri al-Maliki, and the KDP delegation in Baghdad has resulted into resolving lots of past issues between both sides, as well as reaching understandings in relation to the formation of the largest parliamentary bloc”.

Iraqi parliament elections, the first after victory over Islamic State militants, were held on 12th of this month, with results, announced on 19th. Maliki’s list came forth according to the final outcome.

No list has ensured an outright majority, and according to the constitution, the new government should be announced before 90 days after the announcement of results.

Kurds, whose relations with the central government in Baghdad deteriorated since they voted for independence in September, are anxious to secure a place in the next government. Kurdish representatives have met with various political groups, including Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, whose list came first in the polls.

Kurds have been at loggerheads with Maliki, a former prime minister who is widely blamed for stoking sectarianism and for Islamic State’s takeover of Iraqi territories by the end of his term in 2014.

BGG ~ I really, really, really hope these two jackwaggons go ahead and do a FRUITLESS, IGNORANT, self-serving deal in public and GET RAM-JACKED for it.

ABOUT TIME!!

For our newcomers – these two guys are responsible for all kinds of hideous outcomes for much of the Middle East and likely why we should have seen value change in the Dinar as far back as 2012 but still haven’t.

The reason – they had some really nasty, hinky, CROOKED deals cooked up behind the scenes that no one knew about.

I sincerely hope they both get exposed and thrown in prison soon for their crimes against humanity. Barzani too – he’s in this for his own interests. I GUARANTEE IT (Barzani’s motives – NOT AN RV)!!

P.S. to JWFLATT – who regularly asserts “on the internet” I GUARANTEED an RV some while ago, QUIT LYING!! I did no such thing. In fact, I rarely give a direct answer to such inquiries. Who can know?

There was, however, a man named SteveI, who was convinced an RV was imminent. He shared his opinion on the matter. He “guaranteed” the event. He has since passed away. Quit saying things that aren’t true and you might get to discuss it with him one day. Or not.

BGG ~ real question is… will Abadi agree? Can he? We’re about to see what’s what…

______________________________________________________________

BGG ~ Folks are constantly wanting a “run down” on where we’re at in this investment…

Unfortunately, this is a tough call. Anyone claiming they have THE “broad base” of knowledge on Iraq and the Dinar – is lying or is truly ignorant as to how much they don’t know.

For instance, until late last night, we were still waiting for the real results to be published by the IHEC. Up until then, everything was speculation.

Will Sadr have a much bigger hand in the next GOI? Highly likely. Is he the overall winner? Now we know for sure… but he still needs help. He needs a legitimate coalition.

Will Abadi be in the next GOI? Also highly likely. Will he remain as the next PM? Maybe, maybe not.

I give that one 50/50… uhhhhhh – maybe 40/60… or could be 30/70. Whatever…

You get what I’m saying. Let this thing play out a little bit and don’t be gobbling up every piece of rumor out there AS FACT (or some ignorant layman commentary).

My bet? We have a couple of twists and turns coming real soon. So relax… and even if Abadi isn’t the next PM – RELAX.

He may not be the best thing for Iraq’s future. Since you are betting on Iraq and their economy, you want the best for them. As do I.

Mnt Goat (Dinar Guru) –  …So we all know that Al-Abadi did lose the popular votes, thus he did lose the election, however…Could Al-Abadi be the next PM even though he lost the popular election …even though a candidate runs for office and does not win the overall popular vote, he/she can still possibly be nominated as the candidate for the office and, if ratified by parliament, take the duty of forming the next government of Iraq, thus the prime minister position. ...So, in this election process of 2018, we see that Al-Sadr does not want to be prime minister since he is a cleric but wanted to be able to select someone who will fulfill the “Sadr Movement’s” party policies. So, who will he select?

That is the million dollar question…  …Al-Abadi can be nominated and probably will be the nominee submitted to parliament by the “Sadr Movement”However, having said this, it is very premature…There is no proof of this. All the news states Al-Sadr has to still decide however he is open to it. This is what he really said. Let’s just watch it all play out and see if there are any surprises…

MilitiaMan (Dinar Guru) –   Article:  “The Parliament directs the Commission to take the necessary measures to provide confidence in the elections”  The cat is coming out of the bag… Evidence is suggesting the elections are rigged.. No longer doubt but facts. Will the evidence be set aside…?  With Al Sadr meeting with the five, I’ll bet as we are taught the results will be “” more of a move along nothing left to see here… lol Plus the USA ordering Solameini “” to get out of Iraq finds us with the hicupps subsiding as he crosses back over the border..?  it is also obvious the investors are ready to roll when it comes to re construction.. the timeing of it all coming together is fascinating!   Even the video Walkingstick posted has presentation boards in the back drop and advertising those involved!!There was one that stands out to me and if we recall EO 13303, one will know a major player in this project to iraqs MR.. imo.

BGG ~ There is no cat – and no bag. The IHEC will address all the complaints in a thorough and complete fashion. If there were fraud – do you think anyone willing to pull such a thing off wanted Sadr to be the winner? C’MON MAN!! The USA doesn’t order the General to do anything, he is our enemy. He does as the Mullahs tell him.

Regarding E.O. 13303 – this is a continuing Executive Order. It is extended every year. This year being no surprise and no “harbinger” of things to come.

Among the Kurdish parties, the KDP won the most seats with 25, putting it fifth overall in the country, one seat behind Nouri al-Maliki’s State of Law coalition.

The PUK won 18 seats.

The breakdown of the frontrunners and the Kurdish parties is as follows:

Sadr and Abadi close to declaring a clear alliance in Iraq

* Iranian efforts to form a coalition led by al – Maliki and Ameri

– Dubai (Arab event): While delaying suspicions of fraud in Kurdistan, Anbar and Kirkuk , especially in the announcement of the final results of the Iraqi elections, in contrast , is growing debate about the alliances that Stffersha elections. The leaks to the near declaration of a clear alliance between the leader of the alliance, “Asron,” Moqtada al-Sadr, who has achieved leadership in this election, and the leader of the coalition, “victory”, Haider Abadi, in a proactive attempt to block the Iranian efforts to form a coalition led by Nuri al-Maliki and Hadi al-Amiri .

The task led by Qassim Soleimani to form the largest bloc in the next parliament does not seem easy. Many sources close to Sadr say many leaders of different blocs want to join an alliance with Abadi and form a government. Negotiations have made significant progress on some issues . The debate remains only about what is said to be required to sever the relationship between the Abadi Party “Dawa”.

Sadr, who is heading to become the most powerful political force in Iraq, for three days, saying that the Iraqi decision will be from within the border and all partners of princes as long as they are not occupiers of the country, as he put it.

Tensions are still rising in Kirkuk, where gunmen have been besieged by several polling stations and pressuring UNHCR to change the election results.

However, with the introduction of the results of the elections abroad, the Commission showed leaks on the change in positions of forces, which called for the Commission to indicate the presence of changes in the sites of blocks, although not large.

Kaperoni (Dinar Guru) –   The CBI stated a year or so ago, once they start it could take 2 years to delete the zeros.  What that means is that the dinar will appreciate gradually (float) as stated in the IMF Article IV Consultation.  My view is that once the conditions are met, They accept Article VIII, and move to a float, it could take another 2 years to raise the value of the dinar to a value where the zeros are gone.  Not saying it will take that long but it is a directly related to investment.  This is why the IMF stated the Balassa-Samuelson effect in the 2012 Article IV.  The truth is, if investors are lined up to participate in Iraq, it should happen fairly quickly But it is up to Iraq to create the right environment for the value to rise.  At that point all we can do is hope that investors come to Iraq, begin the substantial rebuilding and investment phase creating inflationary pressure on the CBI to raise the value.

Saairon Alliance will appoint Iraq’s new PM: Moussawi

MP of Al-Ahrar Bloc, Monadel al-Moussawi said on Monday that Saairun Alliance will appoint the new Iraqi Prime Minister after it won the most seats in the upcoming parliament.

“Saairun Alliance has won the most number of seats in the Iraqi Parliament, so it will appoint the new Prime Minister”, Moussawi said.

He added that Saairun will not allow for any regional or international interference regarding the formation of the new government.

Saairun Alliance won 54 parliament seats, followed by the Fatah coalition with 47 seats and Victory Alliance with 43 seats.

On May 12, Iraqi people made their way to the poll stations to cast their ballots in the country’s first parliamentary elections since the defeat of ISIS terrorist group in December 2017.

Iraqi cities witnessed a low voter turnout.

According to observers who spoke to The Baghdad Post, this election is considered to be the worst in the Iraqi history in terms of the low voter turnout. They cited rising militancy and rampant violence under Haider Abadi government.

BGG ~ Lot’s of people are misreading this… Sadr’s pick won’t be Moussawi. Sadr will either support Abadi or nominate Ali al-Douai. Either will be just fine…far better than the Iranian option.

All of this is predicated on there not being something hinky in the works.

Quite honestly – Ali Al-Douai (Sadr’s choice) was the guy I was rooting for when Abadi got the job. I thought he gave us a better chance than anyone from the Dawa Party. JMHO.

Quick bio on Al-Douai (off the top of my head)…

I think I recall him being an Engineer and Teacher by trade (not a politician). He often wears a factory jumpsuit to work when not meeting dignitaries. It allows him to go directly to services projects and get involved… a real leader of the people.

He’s somewhat “internet famous” for his work ethic and disdain for the normal “trappings” of political life.

He’s been the sitting Governor of the Maysan Province (very successful at it – BTW) for sometime now.

It sounds like he might be in line for a promotion??

BGG ~ real question is… will Abadi agree? Can he? We’re about to see what’s what…

As do I.

Monadel al-Moussawi

More than six corrupt figures are currently preparing for fleeing Iraq through the Baghdad International Airport, well-informed sources told the Baghdad Post by phone on Monday.

The sources who requested anonymity did not name the corrupt figures. But it is most likely that former PM Nuri al-Maliki is among them.

Sadrists on social media urged prominent Shia cleric Moqtada Al Sadr to swiftly form a government in a bid to prevent corrupt officials from fleeing the country.

With most votes counted, Al-Sadr-led Saeroon (On the Move) coalition is taking the lead.

Corruption-tainted leaders have no place in new gov’t: Sadr spokesperson

Corruption-tainted leaders have no place in new gov’t: Sadr spokesperson

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The Sadr movement will nominate current Maysan governor for the post of prime minister to head up what they want to be a technocrat government that will eliminate those tainted with accusations of corruption, the spokesperson told Rudaw.

Spokesperson Salah al-Obeidi told Rudaw they will not allow figures and leaders involved in corruption to be part of the new team that will lead the country.

Cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, who heads the movement, has led demands for an end to corruption in Baghdad. His followers have regularly held large anti-government protests in Baghdad.

Iraq ranks among the most corrupt nations in the world. Incumbent Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi campaigned on an anti-corruption platform, describing it as a threat equal to terrorism.

Abadi is considered Washington’s man. His list’s failure at the polls was a surprise.

Obeidi also confirmed that Ali Dawai, current Maysan governor, will be Sadr’s candidate for prime minister, explaining they are ready to enter talks with other parties on this.

They appear willing to be flexible in their nomination as Obeidi said Dawai will not necessarily be their final candidate.

The spokesperson added that the government structure should not be sectarian-based and other groups, including Kurds, will be involved.

Al-Sayirun (Marching Towards Reform), is a coalition of Sadr’s supporters, some secularists, and the Iraqi Communist Party. According to preliminary election results, the alliance has won the most seats, followed by al-Fatih, pushing Abadi’s Nasr (Victory) Alliance into third place.

Under the Iraqi constitution, after the final election results are released, the president gives 15 days for the newly elected parliament to hold its first session. The oldest MP will preside over the session where the speaker and deputy will be chosen.

Then the new parliament will elect a new president within three days. The new president will recommend the largest bloc in the parliament form the cabinet. If that bloc fails, another bloc will be recommended to form the government, this time within 15 days.

Sadr appeared to call for the formation of a technocratic government in a pun-laden tweet on Monday.

French report: Election results will change after the addition of 1.7 million votes for the special ballot and voters abroad

Baghdad today  – The results of the Iraqi elections may change suddenly for some parties after the addition of the votes of the special and external voters, which are about 1.7 million votes.

The report said that “the Iraqis have formed a political surprise by the receipt of lists against the current political structure, to advance the legislative elections,” according to partial results showed, a big difference from the Prime Minister Haider Abadi, which has the support of a large international,

“These official partial results, which appeared on Sunday night, do not include the vote of security forces, expatriates and displaced people, who can change the data after counting their votes.

According to Agence France-Presse, “these two lists, the first followed by the leadership of Moqtada al-Sadr, and includes the Communists, and the second opening, which includes factions of the popular crowd close to Iran, in the past, a speech hostile to Washington, despite their fighting alongside US forces against the organization calling.

“The alliance of Sadr and the Communist Party on the basis of fighting corruption, ranked first in six provinces out of 18, and second in four more after the elections that took place on Saturday.”

Coalition supporters, who have demonstrated weekly against corruption since 2015, gathered pictures of Sadr and firemen in central Baghdad to celebrate “the victory over the corrupt and the new stage of the Iraqi people, and chant: Free Free Baghdad! Iran by land!”

The Fath Alliance, which includes the popular mobilization factions that played a crucial role in supporting the security forces to defeat an oppressive organization, first dissolved in four provinces, and second in eight.

“For Abbadi, supported by the international coalition, he has succeeded behind the conquest and all the provinces except Nineveh, and the largest cities of Mosul, which Abadi announced in July.”

Earlier, several political officials pointed out that “Abadi will be ranked first with about 60 seats in parliament.”

“However, these numbers can change, as the counting of votes does not include the votes of about 700 thousand elements of the Iraqi security forces, in addition to the votes of about one million expatriates Iraqi.”

She pointed out that “the biggest loss in the elections was the share of former Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, who leads a coalition of state law, and maintains strong relations with Iran.” “According to partial results, this coalition came in fourth place.”

Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi addressed the Iraqi people yesterday, calling on citizens and political blocs to “respect the results of the elections and abide by the proper legal means of violations,” expressing full readiness “to work and cooperate in forming an Iraqi government free from corruption and quotas and not subject to foreign agendas. “He said.

Some observers believe, according to the French report, that “the word Abadi came in response to the spokesman of a coalition of state law, Abbas al-Yasiri, who, in remarks, yesterday, the government of Abadi, the responsibility of chaos during the elections,” adding that “weak government and weak security led to chaos Which took place in the elections. ”

Abadi said during the speech broadcast by Al-Iraqiya semi-official television: “Since the first day of our receipt of this government in 2014, we have prioritized the liberation of the land of Iraq and the prevention of expansion to the rest of the provinces and our work to achieve security and stability and end sectarianism among Iraqis, People of one people “.

He pointed out that his government “sought with all effort and sincerity to be a strong state, and its prestige respected in the regional and international environment, and that the government is free of corruption and abhorrent quotas, which we have given the most important and the largest of them.”

In his speech, Abadi said that under the Constitution of the Republic of Iraq, “the full responsibility of the country’s leadership and protection and defend its unity, interests and sovereignty until the formation of the new government.”

On the other hand, the head of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Nechirvan Barzani, yesterday, the parties winning the election to start talks on forming a new government.

The head of the Kurdistan Regional Government said in a statement issued yesterday that “the President of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Nechirvan Barzani, received the special envoy of the US President to the international coalition against Da’id, Brett McGurk, and Douglas Seelman, US ambassador to Iraq, and a diplomatic delegation accompanying them.

The statement said Barzani “invited the Iraqi and Kurdish parties winning to start talks on forming a new government with political and architectural projects and visions for the present and future of Iraq.”

6 corrupts, perhaps including Nuri Al-Maliki, about to flee Iraq: Sources

Dinar Daily NEWS Blog – May 12th

BGG ~ No matter what anyone says, there is still a ways to go.

We need to wait and get a true reading on what the fullsome numbers look like once everything is counted…

It sounds like Abadi’s faction won a significant number of seats… which is a big deal for Abadi.

He will need still help to “form” the next GOI… and he may get it… FROM THE KURDS (and others).

The real story out of these elections will be this… It wasn’t about Maliki vs. Abadi that turned out to be the real issue. It was Kurds.

The Kurds may well turn out to be the “kingmakers” that some have speculated… but it may not be the “old guard” Kurds (the KDP). It looks like to me – the KDP (the same sh!T bags who were in a hinky, secret alliance with Maliki all along)… look to have gotten blown out this time around. There was a change movement in this election – but it started in Kurdistan. The big numbers seem to have been split between the two (or three) opposition parties, the Goran, the PUK and to a lesser extent the Democracy faction, led by Barham Saleh.

It was a stunning day in Iraqi politics!!

Iraqi Supreme Court: Article 140 is in force and must be implemented

The Supreme Federal Court issued a decision on constitutional article 140, noting that it is one of the important articles of the Constitution and does not die in any way.

The legal expert Khalil Mirani said in an interview with the official website of the Kurdistan Democratic Party that the Federal Supreme Court issued a few days ago its decision on the constitutional article 140, explaining that according to the court’s decision, Article 140 of the articles of the Iraqi Constitution is not in any form and must be implemented, he said.

He added that “the decision came in response to the people and the Iraqi forces, which claimed that the 140 has expired, but the Kurds insist on it, because the Iraqi authorities when the implementation of any constitutional article in favor of the Kurds do not implement.”

The legal expert pointed out that “the Kurds have been busy during the last period of building Iraq to live all Iraqi people under the state in all their components after 80 years of dictatorship and become a federal democracy,” but added that “it appeared that those who ascend the throne of power in Iraq governed by mentality Previous itself “.

He stressed that “the implementation of Article 140 until 2007, but it was not implemented, because of Baghdad,” pointing out that “the Kurds will not give up those areas of Kurdistan, which falls within the constitutional Article 140.”

He explained that “most of those areas were until last year under the authority of the Kurdistan Region,” but added that “because of some traitors, the region lost those territories.”

“The people should punish the traitors who caused this great betrayal in the loss of part of the territory of Kurdistan,” he said.

Iraq’s Maliki poses as Shi’ite champion in race for top job

BAGHDAD (Reuters) – Former Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki fulfilled his life-long goal of wresting power from the country’s minority Sunnis after the fall of Saddam Hussein but his drive to entrench Shi’ite dominance proved his downfall.

Blamed for the widespread corruption and divisive policies that contributed to the collapse of the Iraqi military and the rise of Islamic State, Maliki lost the premiership to fellow Dawa Party member Haider al-Abadi after a 2014 election.

Now, after four years sidelined as one of three largely ceremonial vice-presidents, Maliki is taking on Abadi in a May 12 election in a bid to win a third term as prime minister, and is posing again as Iraq’s Shi’ite champion.

Posters of Grand Ayatollah Mohammed Baqir al-Sadr who was executed by Saddam in 1980 fly at Maliki’s rallies, the dominant color of his campaign banners is the green of Islam and he is proposing to do away with the power-sharing formula that has ensured government roles for the dominant non-Shi’ite groups.

Sentenced to death under Saddam for being part of the outlawed Shi’ite Islamic Dawa Party, Maliki spent nearly a quarter of century in exile mainly in Syria and Iran, continually agitating for the dictator’s downfall.

After returning in 2003, Maliki joined Iraq’s interim government and became prime minister in 2006, establishing a reputation as a shrewd political operator and the Shi’ite leader who pulled Iraq back from the brink of civil war.

Maliki’s supporters praise him for signing Saddam’s death warrant in 2006 and for refusing to allow U.S. forces to stay in Iraq beyond 2011.

But during eight years in office, Maliki was also perceived as an inveterate sectarian who alienated the minority Sunnis and Kurds by shutting them out of key security positions and undermining power-sharing.

“When he became prime minister, he continued to function as an underground Dawa operative. He put in place shadow Dawa cells in each ministry reporting directly to him, and not the minister,” said a non-Shi’ite who served in Maliki’s cabinet.

“It wouldn’t be far-fetched to say that he created a parallel government and parallel security services reporting directly to him,” the former minister told Reuters.

Responding to accusations Maliki ran a parallel government, his media adviser, Abbas al-Musawi, said the former prime minister was at times forced to launch initiatives directly to boost the economy when he felt ministers from other groups were delaying or obstructing the work of government.

Blamed for letting Islamic State seize a third of Iraq in 2014, Maliki was blocked from winning a third term by Iraq’s top Shi’ite cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, opening the door for Abadi to become prime minister.

‘POLITICAL MAJORITY’

On the face of it, Maliki’s campaign call for a multi-ethnic “political majority” government to make the administration more efficient and cohesive could be seen as a break with his past.

Maliki is proposing to replace the system whereby the cabinet must reflect the parliamentary representation of political parties with a multi-ethnic governing majority and a multi-ethnic opposition minority.

But non-Shi’ite politicians fear the plan could keep the main non-Shi’ite groups out of government and reduce their influence, in contrast to the more inclusive policies of Abadi.

“Shi’ite religious parties have been controlling the key positions of the state, public administrations and security services since 2003. Having a political majority rule under these conditions will remove all the checks and balances non-Shi’ite parties have,” said Jaber al-Jaberi, a Sunni MP.

Opponents say the proposed system would, in practice, allow a prime minister to chose Kurd or Sunni ministers who are not representatives of the main Kurdish or Sunni parties, as long as they were qualified and agreed on a common program.

“The claims that there is a deep state controlled by the Dawa is a big lie,” said Saad al-Muttalibi, a lawmaker from Maliki’s group in parliament.

Campaign posters of former Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki is seen ahead of the parliamentary election, in Baghdad, Iraq, May 1, 2018. Picture taken May 1, 2018. REUTERS/Thaier al-Sudan

“The previous (Maliki) governments were partnership cabinets and the political forces that took part in them share the credit of success and the blame of failure,” he said.

Maliki’s followers see his removal in 2014 as a conspiracy because he championed Shi’ite interests in Iraq and the region.

“He is a strong leader, he is not afraid of confrontation,” said Mohamed Ghabbar, a student in the Shi’ite holy city of Kerbala, south of the capital Baghdad.

In Syria, Maliki sided with Shi’ite neighbor Iran and Bashar al-Assad in the civil war pitting the Syrian president against predominantly Sunni opponents backed by Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey.

Like many Iraqi Shi’ite leaders Maliki is closely tied to Iran, where he built relationships during his exile.

In his election campaign, Maliki continues to advocate an anti-Saudi line, implicitly criticizing Abadi for rebuilding bridges with Riyadh and other Sunni capitals.

“I had told these countries that I won’t allow the regime in Syria to fall,” he said in an April 24 interview to Al Mayadeen, a Lebanese TV channel close to Assad, who belongs to the Alawite sect which is an offshoot of Shi’ism.

“Saudi Arabia failed (in Syria) and it is trying now to bring Iraq to the Saudi alliance. Iraq can’t be part of this alliance,” he said, in an apparent reference to a conference in Kuwait in February to raise funds for Abadi to rebuild Iraq.

As the leader of the Dawa Party, Maliki will command a solid base of Shi’ite support in the election, especially from religious Shi’ites wary of power-sharing.

But this time round, the Shi’ite vote looks set to be split between three frontrunners: Abadi, Maliki and another ally of Iran, militia leader Hadi al-Amiri, whose stature and popularity rose after he commanded the fight against Islamic State.

If no clear winner emerges, Maliki will have to call on all his negotiating skills again to secure a governing alliance, or risk being sidelined once more.

Who are the corrupt in Iraq?

Maliki, when threatening his political opponents with files of corruption, does not disclose his (own) personal corruption.

By: Farouk Yousef

As the legislative elections in Iraq approach, the condemnation of corruption and corruption has escalated to the point that we recognize that Iraq is the only country in the world where the opinion of the people and politicians is in line with the call to fight corruption exceptionally.

Everyone there stands against corruption. The poor and the rich. Outcasts and Privileges. Servants and gentlemen. Secularists and Baptists. Public and private. Intellectuals and secondhand clothing vendors. Opponents and beneficiaries of the spoils of the system of sectarian quotas. Former murderers and new killers. Imams of mosques and militia leaders who committed the most heinous crimes.

At every moment, the Iraqis seem to be coming out in a demonstration against corruption these days. They have nothing to do except to attack corruption. Which in turn suggests a typical awakening after the night of long religious parties.

Corruption has destroyed the lives of Iraqis. That’s true. Corruption humiliated them and defeated them and deviated by their morals, they became either robbers or thieves. Corruption has destroyed their values, their customs and the realities of their lives, and stolen the most beautiful of what they have – social solidarity and tolerance in looking at the different one. Corruption has deprived them of education, health, and infrastructure services and has destroyed their ability to see the facts as they are. Neither their religion nor their world is fresh.

All this is true, but corruption is not an abstract or intellectual phenomenon.

Here is a legal question: “Who are the corrupt?” No corruption of non-corrupt…

Abadi: The corrupt have become restless

Information / Baghdad .. Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi said on Tuesday that the corrupt in Iraq have become restless by the measures taken by the government, pointing to his quest for a new renaissance in Iraq.

Abadi said in a speech during an election festival in the province of Wasit and followed by “information”, “The corrupt in Iraq are getting mad with every action by the government,” noting that “the corrupt failed in the face of government action.”

He added that “the corrupt were pressing for the collapse of the dinar prices and work to raise prices, but failed to do so,” asserting his quest for “a new renaissance of Iraq to restore its past and even better.”

Abadi stressed that “the government reduced the privileges of all officials during the last stage,” pointing out that “hit the corrupt and the hands with an iron fist.”

BGG ~ I have to think – with the context of his commentary in this article focused on the value of the Dinar, Abadi has something planned for after the elections. I’m not exactly sure what he’s talking about here… but it sounds good to me!!
