Iraq, Turkey, and Syria are laying out the implementation plan for the Fishkhabur-Ovakoy border crossing and development road.
An official Iraqi delegation, headed by the Chairman of the Border Ports Authority, Lieutenant General Omar Al-Waeli, discussed in the Turkish capital, Ankara, the files of transport, border connectivity, trade and transit, foremost among them the executive procedures to activate the “Fishkhabur-Ovakoy” crossing and link it to the vital development road project.
A statement issued by Al-Waili’s media office stated that the talks, in which the directors of land transport and railways participated, included bilateral meetings with the Turkish side to implement the memorandum of understanding signed between the two countries regarding rail and road transport through the new crossing, based on the maps and routes specified by the joint technical committees.
The statement added that the Iraqi delegation also participated in a tripartite meeting that included representatives from the Turkish and Syrian sides, which focused on raising the level of trade exchange, revitalizing transit traffic, and facilitating the movement of goods and travelers, in addition to strengthening coordination between border institutions to reduce logistical obstacles.
These moves aim to complete the executive components of the development road project and link it to ports and border crossings, thereby strengthening Iraq’s position as a regional center for transport, trade and transit between the countries of the region and global markets.
