UNAMI: We will not engage in the independence referendum of the Kurdistan region

The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) confirmed Thursday that it will not engage in a referendum to be held next September for the independence of the Kurdistan region from Iraq.

In a statement received by Al-Ghad Press, the mission said that its Electoral Assistance Office, following its meeting with the High Electoral Commission in the Kurdistan region, would "correct the inaccurate reports that UNAMI will supervise, monitor and support the referendum process."

"The Electoral Assistance Office confirms that it does not intend to engage in any way with regard to the referendum to be held on 25 September 2017, as announced by the Presidency of the Kurdistan region of Iraq by resolution No. 2017/106, on 8 June 2017.
