Belgium Extends Anti-IS Mission in Iraq and Syria

Belgium decided on June 16 to extend its anti-terrorism efforts within the Global Coalition fighting the Islamic State (IS) in Iraq and Syria.

Belgian fighter jets will continue to operate over Iraq and Syria to fight IS until the end of 2017 and for this mission the government will allocate $19 million, Belgian PM Charles Michel said as quoted by the country’s media.

The current mission of the Belgian military in Iraq and Syria was to end in June, 2017, but it will be extended for six more months.

Belgian military will send four F-16 fighter jets along with 100 troops to a base in Jordan for participating in the military efforts against IS in Iraq and Syria.

“This is a strong signal towards our partners. Belgium is a reliable partner in the international coalition,” said Michel.
