Abadi postpones visit to Riyadh 'for domestic reasons' - sources

Postponing Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi's visit to Saudi Arabia, which was scheduled on Wednesday, was upon a request from the Iraqi side, DPA quoted diplomatic sources in Riyadh as saying on Thursday.

The sources said that Abadi's visit will come within a tour to several countries in the region, adding that postponing his visit to Saudi Arabia was due to Iraqi domestic reasons without mentioning further details.

Saudi sources refused to comment on delaying the Iraqi prime minister's visit.

In a press conference held on Tuesday, Abadi declined to talk about the reasons behind paying the visit to Riyadh and refused to link between it and the Gulf crisis.

Earlier this month Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates Libya’s eastern-based government, and Yemen have cut diplomatic ties with Qatar.

The unprecedented move is being seen as a significant split between powerful Gulf countries.
