Charity to give 1mn IQD to family of each Peshmerga who died in ISIS war

The Barzani Charity Foundation (BCF) will provide 1,000,000 IQD ($850) to every family who lost a member in the fight against ISIS.

“On Thursday evening, the foundation will prepare an evening meal for the martyrs’ families and announce the project, which includes all the martyrs without discrimination. The project is sponsored by Sirwan Barzani,” Ibrahim Sameen, BCF communication director, told Rudaw.

They plan to distribute the funds to all families before Eid, the end of Ramadan.

Sirwan Barzani is a Peshmerga commander and nephew of President Masoud Barzani.

Sameen explained that BCF received a list of 1,410 Peshmerga from the Ministry of Peshmerga. That includes 394 from Erbil province, 444 from Duhok province, 344 from Sulaimani province, and 228 from Kirkuk and Garmain areas.

According to information previously obtained by Rudaw, the number of Peshmerga killed in the war against ISIS reaches more than 1,700. Sameen said that if a name is missing from the list, the family can contact the Ministry of Peshmerga to receive the assistance.

“Those martyrs who had two wives, the assistance includes both of them, which means each will be paid 1,000,000 IQD,” Sameen added.

Officials from the Kurdistan Regional Government and foreign consulates are expected to attend the event on Thursday.

The BCF also has an ongoing special program to pay $50 to each child of the deceased Peshmerga.

Sameen said they are inviting business leaders to participate in assisting the families of fallen Peshmerga.

A 2015 campaign led by Rudaw's Ranj Sangawi raised millions for widows and children of Peshmerga.
