'Time not appropriate for holding Kurdistan referendum' – UK ambassador
Time is not appropriate to hold Kurdistan Region's referendum on independence, British ambassador to Iraq Frank Baker said on Tuesday, adding the decision to hold it has to be taken in collaboration with Iraq.
In a press statement, Baker noted that the British government's position is clear as it supports any people's right to self-determination, stressing that the Iraqi people have the same right.
The EU has stressed that the interests of the Iraqi people require that they remain in a unified Iraq, expressing reservations and caution about setting a date for the referendum on the independence of the Kurdistan region.
The Change (Gorran) Movement and Kurdistan Islamic Movement announced on Tuesday boycotting Kurdistan Region's referendum on independence.
Kurdistan Regional Government has announced recently that it would vote on September 25 on whether to split from the rest of Iraq and form an independent nation.
