President Talabani returns to Baghdad to kickstart national conference
ERBIL, Jan. 29 (AKnews) - President Jalal Talabani landed in Baghdad on Saturday evening having undergone surgery in Germany.
A senior member of Talabani's party the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan Fuad Masum told AKnews earlier that the President would return directly to Baghdad because the long heralded but slow to arrive national conference is depending on his leadership.
Talabani called for the national conference between the political blocs after disputes escalated and divisions between Iraqiya List and the State of Law Coalition widened after Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi was indicted on terrorism charges.
On Dec. 19, the day after the last American troops finally left Iraq, Baghdad's courts issued an arrest warrant for Hashemi alleging the Sunni senior Iraqiya List member was using his bodyguards as a kill squad. Hashemi strenuously denies the allegations and has taken refuge in Kurdistan Region where he is unlikely to be arrested.
