US Treasury extends sanctions against Iran to include Communications Minister

Baghdad - The United States has confirmed sanctions against Iranian Communications Minister Mohammad Javad Azri Jahrami, accusing him of "widespread censorship of the Internet."

The US Treasury said in a statement on Friday that the sanctions include freezing the assets of the Iranian minister, and prohibits US citizens and entities from any deal with him.

US Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin said in a statement that "Iranian leaders know that a free and open Internet reveals their illegitimacy, and therefore seek censorship to suppress protests against the regime."

Internet services have been cut off in Iran for several days this week as protests continue to raise fuel prices in the country.
