Pentagon: US Forces will not participate in the establishment of the safe area in Syria

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - US Defense Secretary Mark Esper said on Friday his country would not take part in establishing a safe zone in northern Syria.

Mark Esper, in press statements, that "US ground forces continue a deliberate withdrawal from northeastern Syria, and will not participate in the establishment of the safe zone," noting that "will remain in contact with Turkey and the Syrian Democratic Forces," according to the site "RT".

"The United States will continue to monitor the area from the air to ensure the security of prisons that hold ISIS detainees," a Pentagon official was quoted as saying by media.

On Thursday, US Vice President Mike Pence confirmed an agreement with Turkey on a ceasefire in northeastern Syria.

"The United States did not impose further sanctions on Turkey after the ceasefire in Syria," Mike Pence told a news conference with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Pines added that "the Turkish side agreed not to conduct military operations, in the head of the Syrian eye," noting that the work "began to withdraw Kurdish forces from the area of ​​hostilities."

He continued, "The United States will not have soldiers on the ground in Syria," noting that Washington "received assurances from the Syrian Kurdish YPG for an orderly withdrawal."

"What has been agreed will serve the interests of the Kurds in Syria and establish a long-term buffer zone," he said.
