Saudi Arabia threatens Iran if the Strait of Hormuz is closed

Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir on Thursday threatened Iran to react "very, very strongly" if it closed the Strait of Hormuz.

"If Iran closes the Strait of Hormuz, it will lead to a very, very strong reaction," media quoted al-Jubeir as saying in press statements from London.

"The need to calm the region and we can not achieve this because of the tension caused by Iran."

On Thursday morning, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards shot down a US drone over the Strait of Hormuz with a surface-to-air missile, the guards said, confirmed by the US military.

This comes in light of the escalating tension between the United States and Iran and the taking of military action in the Gulf, against the backdrop of economic sanctions imposed by Washington on Tehran, and the threat of closing the Strait of Hormuz if prevented from exporting oil through it.
