Berlin offers Washington increased support for Kurds

German news reports said Thursday that Berlin plans to support the United States in establishing a safe area in western Kurdistan, according to a report by Spiegel Online.

The report said that the German government intends to support the United States in the task of establishing a safe area in western Kurdistan, adding that Berlin offered Washington to extend the mission of its forces for this purpose in the international coalition to defeat a supporter.

According to the report, this means that the German Tornado aircraft will continue to take aerial photographs and to provide fighter aircraft to countries participating in the International Alliance by air fuel.

It is noteworthy that the German Bundestag parliament had agreed in October to extend the mission of German troops in Iraq for a period of time ending by October 31, 2019.

The mission of the German forces in Iraq, according to the parliamentary mandate, is to explore the region by air, to provide friendly air-to-air fighters and to exchange information on combat zones or crisis, as well as military and coordination advisory missions with the headquarters of the International Force.

According to Spiegel Online, the United States has asked Germany on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference to contribute to the protection of the safe area in the north of Syria to protect the Kurds.
