US Congress receives secret statements on Iran next week

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Officials from the Donald Trump administration will make secret statements about the situation with Iran next week after lawmakers from the Democratic and Republican parties asked for more information, US congressional sources said.

"Foreign Secretary Mike Pompeo, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Joseph Danford and Acting Defense Minister Patrick Chanahan will attend Tuesday's hearing before the full Senate," Reuters quoted congressional aides as saying.

Aides in the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives said they "also expect to report next week with Pompeo, but other details have not yet been finalized"

Members of Congress have been complaining for weeks that "the Trump administration has not given them enough information about the current tension with Iran, and some Republicans say the administration has not told them anything about it"

Relations between Washington and Tehran have become more strained in the wake of Trump's decision this month to try to halt Iran's oil exports altogether and strengthen the US presence in the Gulf in response to what he said were Iranian threats.

Washington withdrew its diplomatic staff from its embassy in Baghdad this week following weekend attacks on four oil tankers in the Gulf.

Trump said Thursday he hoped the United States would not go to war with Iran.
