Russian delegation in Baghdad to discuss wheat exports to Iraq

Direct: The director of the General Company for Grain Trade in Iraq, Naeem al-Mukassousi said that a Russian delegation to visit the company to discuss the possibility of Moscow to export wheat to Baghdad.

Iraq, a major grain buyer in the Middle East and traditionally dependent on US imports, wants to allow Russian wheat originating in its government tenders and is expected to send representatives to Russia to check the quality of wheat and its suitability for use in its massive food support program before the end of the year.

"The visit came to discuss the possibility of importing Russian wheat according to the specifications and standards adopted by the company and discussing the way to organize the contract," Mukassosi said in a statement.

Iraqi Trade Minister Mohammad Hashim said Thursday that Iraq had signed an agreement with the United States to import wheat and rice.

European traders said on Wednesday that the Iraqi Ministry of Commerce had bought 50,000 tons of wheat for supply from the United States in a global tender closed last week.
