Iraq gains UN leadership post to counter trafficking, money laundering

Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the election of Iraq as vice-president of the ninth Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime.

"Iraq was elected as vice-president of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime at the ninth session held at the United Nations headquarters in Vienna today," ministry spokesman Ahmad Mahjoub said in a press statement.

Mahjoub added, "The Iraqi chargé d'affaires in Vienna, Osama al-Nashi, was chosen for this post, which is a high position attained by Iraq.”

The UN Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime was adopted in 2000 to prevent the laundering of money and the trafficking of arms and humans.
