Sadr demands Abbadi to resign

Sadr demands Abbadi to resignThe two main lists, which won the legislative elections last May, demanded the resignation of the government of Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi following an extraordinary session of parliament to discuss the crisis in Basra.

“We ask the prime minister and the cabinet minister to resign and apologize to the Iraqi people,” said spokesman Hassan al-Akoli.
For his part, said a spokesman for the alliance, “the conquest,” led by Hadi al-Amiri, MP Ahmad al-Asadi, “The failure and apparent failure in the crisis in Basra was unanimous by the deputies … We demand the resignation of the prime minister and ministers immediately.”

The Iraqi parliament held an emergency session to discuss the crisis in Basra on Saturday afternoon, during which Abadi warned of the consequences of politicizing the crisis.
Basra has been gripped by violent protests for five days as protesters looted government buildings and set fire to them, voicing their rejection of “political corruption.”
Protests began for the first time in July to protest against poor public services but escalated last week.

On Friday, protesters stormed the Iranian consulate in the city, setting fire to it and condemning what many described as Iranian influence in Iraq’s political affairs.
