Report: Iraq’s Abadi now loyal to US camp

A Lebanese newspaper claimed that the United States is desperately seeking to win a second term for Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar Al-Abadi who is “playing a vital role for Washington”.

The Al-Akhbar newspaper, which has close links to Hezbollah, said the US has been exerting pressure on Iraqi Kurds to accept Al-Abadi as prime minister for a second term, “allowing for additional decisions against the Popular Mobilisation Forces and Iran, without opposition from Washington’s opponents”.

“Washington is fighting alongside the biggest bloc in the Iraqi parliament. Not only did it overthrow former prime minister Nouri Al-Maliki and enable Al-Abadi to take his place, it seeks to prevent those considered Iran’s allies from taking power in any way,” the paper said.
