Trump responds to Rohani "strongly" and warns him of a fate similar to Saddam Hussein

US President Donald Trump on Saturday promised his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rowhani that he would have a similar fate to Saddam Hussein if he continued to threaten Washington.

"You never threaten the United States again or you will suffer obstacles that you have suffered in the past," Trump told Rohani from social networking sites, apparently referring to Saddam Hussein.

"We are no longer a country that bears your disparaging statements about violence and killing, be careful."

Iranian President Hassan Rowhani warned his US counterpart Donald Trump on Sunday against continuing hostile policies to Tehran. "America should know ... the battle with Iran is the mother of battles," he said, but he did not rule out peace between the two countries.

Iran faces growing US pressure and impending sanctions after Trump's decision to withdraw the United States from the 2015 nuclear deal.

"Mr Trump is not messing with the lion's tail, it will only regret," Rouhani told a crowd of Iranian diplomats.

"America should know that peace with Iran is the real peace and the war with Iran is the mother of all wars," he said, leaving the door open to the possibility of peace between the two countries after their relations broke off since the 1979 Islamic revolution.

"The more Europe tries to get closer to the agreement with us, the White House hinders it, in the new circumstances we seek to correct relations with Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain," he said.

Rohani ridiculed Trump's threat to halt Iranian oil exports, saying Iran had a dominant position in the Gulf and Strait of Hormuz, the main shipping route.

A clear spiritual threat this month was to block oil shipments from neighboring countries in response to Washington's attempts to force all countries to stop buying Iranian Oil.
