NATO sets date for opening new military base in Iraq

The head of the US Central Command in the Middle East, General Joseph Futil, said Saturday that NATO has set the date for the opening of a new military base in Iraq.

"The next fall of this year will see the opening of the new base," Fotil said in a press statement. "The key role of al-Qaeda will be training and other benefits."

"I think the opening of al-Qaeda will have an impact on the development of Iraqi security forces and generally contribute to reforms in the security sector that Iraqis have started."

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg announced NATO's agreement to establish a non-combat mission in Iraq led by Canada to train Iraqi forces.
