Iraqi Supreme Court: Cancelling IDPs, Diaspora, Security Forces Votes Unconstitutional

ERBIL - The Federal Supreme Court of Iraq made a final decision on a recent parliament's new law, saying that a manual recount of ballots casted in the May 12 election is constitutional, but the same is not true for the annulment of diaspora, IDPs, and the security forces’s votes.

The Iraqi Parliament had previously, on June 6, issued a decree to manually recount the entire votes, and to annul the ballots of IDPs, diaspora, and security forces, including removing commissioners from the Independent High Electoral Commission, replacing them with nine judges based on an amendment of a law dubbed "article 3" of 2013.

The federal court, however said that the amended law is unconstitutional and rejected it, according to which, the IDPs, diaspora, and security forces’ votes are now counted.
