Mosul: First mall opens in the city after ISIS

The first mall opens amidst celebrations in the Iraqi city of Mosul since the defeat of the so-called Islamic State in July 2017

After over almost eight months since the liberation of Mosul, the city’s first mall has been built, signalling a return of economic dynamism and activity once again.

During the fight to liberate Mosul from the so-called Islamic State, much of the city’s infrastructure was heavily destroyed, with buildings razed and malls such as these largely destroyed.

Now, however, the situation has changed completely. Built in the Arabi neighbourhood, located to the north of the city, hundreds of civilians came to the mall to celebrate its grand opening.

“We are opening Maxi Mall in the Arabi neighbourhood of Mosul,” said one of the officials, who cut the ribbon to signal the mall’s opening. “This is a shopping centre with quality goods. This opening is part of the various initiatives that have been launched since the liberation”.

For many citizens across Mosul, the opening of this new mall represents a return to some form of normalcy after the brutal reign of ISIS.

Locals remember the harsh practises enacted by the group, with basic liberties such as shopping a daily difficulty. Other recount how individuals would be fined or lashed if they were not dressed according to ISIS’ draconian rules.

“We were living in grief. There were no malls or such things,” said one man. “We were living under severe oppression, under the oppression of ISIS. With the opening of this mall, look how happy everyone is now”.

While reconstruction remains an issue in Mosul, locals are undertaking their own initiatives to restore the city to its former glory. This includes opening cafes and libraries once again, and putting the dark memory of ISIS behind them.
