Trump's envoy on ISIS holds intensive talks with Iraqi political leaders

US President Donald Trump's Special Envoy for the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS Brett McGurk has begun intensive contacts with Iraqi forces and parties to resolve the issue of the mechanism of their participation in the next government.

Well-informed sources said McGurk is conducting intensive contacts with Iraqi political leaders, with the aim of reaching common understandings that will speed up the formation of the next government, as soon as the final results of the Parliamentary elections are announced by the High Electoral Commission (HEC).

McGurk is expected to hold discussions with Iraqi political leaders, including Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al Abadi, in addition to Muqtada al Sadr, Ayad Allawi, Osama al Nujaifi and Prime Minister of Iraqi Kurdistan Nechirvan Barzani.

The Parliamentary elections were marked by record low turnout. It was the first since Iraq declared victory over the ISIS group and the fourth since the 2003 US-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein.
