The Foreign Ministry is seeking to activate a trade agreement with Canada signed since 1982

Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari said on Saturday that the ministry's efforts to activate the agreement on trade and economic exchange with Canada signed since 1982.

Al-Jaafari's office said in a statement that " Al-Jaafari met with Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Omar al-Ghubra today on the sidelines of the conference to support the future of Syria and the region under the auspices of the European Union and the United Nations in the Belgian capital Brussels.

"The two sides reviewed the bilateral relations between Baghdad and Ottawa and ways to strengthen them, stressing the need to exchange visits between the two countries' officials to serve the interests of the two friendly peoples," he added.

Jaafari said that his country is seeking to activate the agreement on trade and economic exchange signed with Canada since 1982, calling on the Canadian side to "designate an ambassador in Baghdad in the framework of the development of bilateral relations between the two countries."

Al-Jaafari appreciated the support provided by Canada to Iraq in the face of the terrorist gangs. "Iraq thanks your participation in the international coalition against the terrorist gangs and the support of Iraq in various fields."

He noted that "the humanitarian will of the whole world met to stand by Iraq in its war against Da'ash."

For his part, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Omar al-Ghubra, congratulated the liberation of Iraqi cities from profiting from the terrorist gangs, pointing out that "his country congratulates the victories achieved by the Iraqi people in its war against a supporter."

"Canada is proud to support Iraq in the war against terrorism, and continues to stand by you in all areas," he said, adding that "the subject of naming an ambassador to Canada in Baghdad will be soon."
