9 countries put conditions ahead of Kuwait conference to reconstruct Iraq

9 countries put conditions ahead of Kuwait conf. to reconstruct Iraq

At least nine countries have put prior conditions ahead of their participation at the Kuwait conference to reconstruct Iraq, Arabic language Al Araby Al Jadid newspaper reported Thursday.

The reported cited an Iraqi minister as confirming that more than 32 countries had not yet confirmed their participation.

The conference is due to be held February 12-14.

There are countries, some of which were part of the international coalition against ISIS, have reservations on taking part at the conference, the minister who requested anonymity said.

He added that those countries sought guarantees for a real civil state in Iraq without marginalization.

Meanwhile, Kuwaiti Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Al-Jarallah expects that about 1,000 companies and businessmen will participate in the conference.

On Wednesday, Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar Al-Abadi said there was huge pressure from several global firms to book places at the conference.

Abadi added European companies have twice exceeded their share of assigned seats while the US has closed the door to further applications, adding there will also be a large turnout for regional firms.

BGG ~ You did all catch that, right?!?

"...Abadi added European companies have twice exceeded their share of assigned seats while the US has closed the door to further applications, adding there will also be a large turnout for regional firms..."

It would appear the US has more stroke in this conference and the events leading up to it than any of us may know. Also - I wouldn't put it past Abadi to be trying to hedge against any future muddled result by maybe putting some of this on the heads of the US for whatever comes next. He's got to be on the lookout for these coming elections.

This also puts a different spin on his inability to get a meeting with President Trump while in Davos. Kinda' curious is all...

One way or the other - Iraq has to "pay the Piper"... if they don't - they might not like what happens next.
