Iraqi Integrity Commission issues orders to arrest 17 ministers accused of corruption in 2017

The Integrity Commission of Iraq announced that the number of arrest warrants for corruption charges against ministers or officials with the rank of minister reached 17 in 2017.

"The arrest warrants issued amounted to 2133 orders in one year, of which 996 orders were executed by 68 percent," the head of the authority Hassan al-Yasiri told a news conference on the results of the commission's work in 2017.

He pointed out that "the number of ministers or those at the rank of those who were issued arrest warrants 17 people," and "the number of arrest warrants against special grades and general managers and those of their rank amounted to 273 people."

Al-Yasiri confirmed that the Authority was able to return one trillion and 305 billion dinars (more than one billion dollars) to the state treasury last year, and the amount of funds that the body was able to detect through preventive measures before the corruption amounted to 948 billion dinars (about 800 million dollars).

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced in December that the next phase would see a war to eliminate corruption, one of the most important challenges facing the country.
