Iraqi parliament has approved May 12 as a final date for parliamentary and provincial elections despite calls from the country’s Sunni community to postpone the vote.

The parliament has unanimously approved the date, which was proposed by the government, at Monday’s session, Shiite MP Abbas al-Bayati, said.

The deeply-divided parliament failed many times to set the date, prompting the country’s Supreme Court to issue a ruling on Sunday against any further delay.

Sunni powers have sought to delay the vote until the return of nearly 3 million displaced people who were forced out of their homes due to ISIS and IMIS atrocities.

Since Iraq was invaded in 2003, the country has seen three parliamentary elections.
