Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) announced Thursday that it supports holding the upcoming elections within the time frame set out in the constitution and the law.

In a press statement, KDP MP Ashwaq al-Jaff said although the party is in favor of holding the elections as scheduled, there are some obstacles that may hinder conducting it on time, including the return of displaced persons.

We do not know how the government will address this problem, with the Ministry of Migration and Displacement saying that only 2% of Mosul’s displaced have returned to the city while 3% have returned to Kirkuk.

The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) has confirmed that it is ready to hold election as scheduled, the MP said, adding that she does not expect it will be postponed.

Earlier this month, the IHEC sent an official letter to the Iraqi parliament urging it to hasten the approval of the parliamentary election date.

The parliamentary election is tentatively scheduled for May 12th.
