Yildirim to Abadi: Federal control of Kirkuk is important [expanded]

Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said during his visit to Ankara today to discuss economic and trade files, oil, energy, water and cultural cooperation as well as political and security cooperation, while his Turkish counterpart that the federal control of Kirkuk is important.

"We came to Turkey in the interest of relations, and discussions with Turkish officials included economy, trade, energy, water and political, security and cultural cooperation," Abadi told a joint news conference with his Turkish counterpart Ben Ali Yildirim in Ankara.

"We seek to build relations on the basis of common interests and non-interference in internal affairs, and we have a duty to make the peoples of the region live in peace, and cooperation between us represents the best response to terrorism."

For his part, Yildirim described the steps taken by Abadi towards the referendum of Kurdistan with courage, calling on the administration of the region to retreat from the referendum, stressing "the importance of restoring federal control over Kirkuk to ensure the preservation of its components."

"Our great hope is that all components in Kirkuk will coexist in safety and security," Yildirim said. "The restoration of federal control of Kirkuk is important to ensure the preservation of the city's components."

"We have taken a number of measures at the invitation of our Iraqi brothers to the illegal referendum, and we will continue to take these measures."
