Cancelling the results of Kurdistan Region’s independence referendum, the precondition that the central government has set before initiating a dialogue between Baghdad and Erbil, is impossible to apply, Islam Hussein Issa, a Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) MP, confirmed Sunday.

In a press statement, Issa said that disregarding the opinion of over 3 million people who took part in the referendum is illogical and cannot be allowed

There are other means to deal with the referendum results such as postponing or freezing them if the government was serious about resolving the current crisis and turn a new page in the dialogue with the region without resorting to cancelling the referendum results he noted.

He also pointed out that the central government is coming under internal and foreign pressures

The approach the government is adopting can lead to the rapid secession of Kurdistan from Iraq he further stated.

The federal system has failed. A confederation can be an option or two states governed by one body he added.

Tensions between Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and Baghdad have escalated since the Iraqi Kurds overwhelmingly voted for independence in a referendum last month. https://www.thebaghdadpost.com/en/sto...le-to-apply-MP
