Baghdad Planning to Stop Dollar Sales, Transfers to Kurdistan

As part of its efforts to block the Kurds from moving further towards independence, the Iraqi central government is planning to suspend foreign currency transfers and sales of dollars to banks in Kurdistan Region.

The Iraqi central bank on Tuesday has now informed its counterparts in the Kurdistan region that it would stop selling dollars to four major Kurdish banks and halt all currency transfers, according to the news agency Reuters.

The new possible sanction comes after the Iraqi central government imposed an embargo on Kurdistan Region’s airspace to block international flights from flying to Erbil and Sulaymaniyah airports.

The Baghdad’s pressures are in retaliation for the independence referendum which Kurdistan Region held last week.
