Iraq, represented by the Ministry of Water Resources, extended the maintenance contract of the Mosul Dam with the Italian company Trevi.

"We signed today an annex to the extension of the current contract between our ministry and Italy's Trevi," Minister of Water Resources Hassan al-Janabi said in a statement.

"The current contract between the parties ends in mid-November, but the amount allocated for the contract did not run out," noting that "in view of the real need for joint work at the site of the dam, we extended the work of the current contract until the amount exhausted, or up to five months."

"The US Army Corps of Engineers will continue to supervise the implementation of the work," al-Janabi said, noting that "the cost of supervision of the Corps of Engineers is fully covered by the US government."

The Minister of Water Resources expressed his happiness that the implementation of the contract during the past year led to the provision of an amount we can continue for five more months without affecting the state treasury.

Several international reports have warned in recent years of the possibility of collapse of the dam in Mosul because of the fragile soil on which the body of the dam was built in the mid-eighties of the last century.

Iraq has signed a $ 276 million ($ 296 million) TRIPI contract to repair and repair the Mosul dam for 18 months.

Mosul has been hit by multiple building defects since its inception in the 1980s, built on unstable ground, and US and local officials have repeatedly warned it is in danger of collapse.

As long as the Iraqi government has assured its safety of the dam, despite the publication of guidance on how to avoid damage caused by the collapse.
