Iran closes its air borders with the Kurdistan region at the request of Baghdad

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) on Sunday suspended all flights to Sulaymaniyah and Erbil airports and stopped the passage of planes from the Kurdistan region through Iranian airspace, he said, adding that the decision came at the request of the Iraqi government.
“Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) held a meeting this morning to study the central government’s request to close the Iranian border with the region,” spokesman Qian Khosravi told the official Tasnim news agency.
He added that “due to the failure of good political endeavors for Iran and the insistence of officials in the Kurdistan region of Iraq to hold the referendum has been closed Iranian air borders to flights originating from the Kurdistan region of Iraq at the request of the Iraqi government in Baghdad.”
He explained that “pursuant to that decision, all Iranian flights to airports in the Kurdistan region of Iraq have also stopped,” noting that “the decision includes” stop all flights to the airports of Sulaymaniyah and Arbil and stop the transit of aircraft coming from the Kurdistan region of Iraq through the Iranian airspace. ”
“The hasty decisions by some officials in the Kurdistan region of Iraq will limit the ability and constructive dialogue of the Kurds in the sovereignty of Iraq and will make the security of Kurds, Iraq and the region face serious challenges as well,” Khosravi said.
