The European Union: an advocate working to get the money out of Iraq and Syria

European Union Commissioner for Security Julian King said on Thursday that the 28-nation bloc was working to review the mechanisms and the role that could be done to tackle the financing of terrorism, stressing that "work is just beginning."

"We need to revisit the terrorist financing file and put pressure on terrorist gangs on the ground in Iraq and Syria," King told a news conference in Brussels.

"We are working in Iraq and Syria to extract large amounts of money and I think we need to continue our efforts in an effort to stop this," he said.

"We must be vigilant because there may be a significant risk of new sources of funding for terrorism and we have to prepare for that and see what we need to do to strengthen measures to combat it," he said.

At the press conference, the European Commissioner reviewed the measures taken since 2016 to strengthen security on the EU's external borders, improve information exchange among member states, tighten the screws on terrorists and combat extremism
