The Ministry of Commerce buys 278,000 tons of rice and sugar at a price it has not received since 2003

The Ministry of Commerce announced on Wednesday a contract to buy tons of rice and sugar to support the ration card, saying that the purchase came at competitive prices not received since 2003.
The ministry said in a statement today (September 6, 2017) that the quantities agreed upon in the contract contained 60 thousand tons of Vietnamese yasmine rice, 60 thousand tons of rice of Pakistan and Uruguay, while the share of sugar was 158 thousand tons.
The Ministry added that the prices obtained by the ministry through negotiating with a number of companies that submitted their offers are slightly below the price structure, which has not been received since 2003, which provides large amounts of foreign currency to the budget.
She explained that she worked for more than a year to provide sugar and oil from the local product, which comes in support of the domestic product as well as the provision of foreign currency amounts if contracted from global origin.
On Monday, the ministry bought 60,000 tons of Vietnamese rice in a direct deal without a tender, at a price of $ 590 per ton, including the cost of shipping, with delivery to be made 75 days after opening a letter of credit for the deal.
Local rice production is expected to reach around 250,000 tons this year, leading to a shortage of around 1 million tons, which is covered by imports.
