IS Arms Depot Set on Fire in Hawija

Islamic State's (IS) arms depot caught on fire in the group's stronghold town of Hawija, a local source said on Thursday.

According to the source, who spoke to Almaalomah news website, unknown perpetrators set fire to the IS-held facility in central Hawija, causing a blast. The facility contained weapons and maps belonging to the extremist group, the source added on condition of anonymity.

The town of Hawija, located about 65 kilometers southwest of Kirkuk, was captured by the IS militants back in 2014, when the extremist group emerged in Iraq and declared its self-proclaimed "caliphate."

Hawija remains one of the group's main strongholds in the country to this day. However, the Joint Operations Command announced on Wednesday, they would launch an operation for recapturing the town in the near future.
