Components of Nineveh Plains Seeking to Join Kurdistan Region

The residents of Nineveh Plains are seeking to join Kurdistan Region after their region becomes a province.

Yarwant Niasn Marcos, head of Armans Bloc in the Kurdistan Region Parliament, told BasNews that all the components of Nineveh Plains are willing to join Kurdistan Region and be ruled by KRG, not Baghdad.

Meanwhile, Majid Shingali, an Iraqi MP from Sinjar, told BasNews “Most components and political parties of Nineveh Plains are seeking to be part of Kurdistan Region.”
Nineveh Plains, a region located in Iraq’s northern province of Nineveh, is home to mainly religious and ethnic minorities, including Syriac Christians, Yezidis, Shabaks and Turkmens.

The people of the region previously called on Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani to guarantee their protection from future threats by deploying the Peshmerga forces in their areas, Shingali said, adding “They are now asking to be part of Kurdistan Region.

Barzani has suggested the formation of a separate provincial administration for the areas of Nineveh Plains, said Ghazwan Dawoodi, a member of Nineveh Provincial Council. He noted "Members of Nineveh Provincial Council, including Kurdish, Arab, and Turkmen representatives, all support President Barzani’s initiative to create a separate province incorporating the Nineveh Plains."
