Barzani to EU Amb: Referendum Decision Unwavering

Kurdistan Region's independence referendum has priority over all the other causes and the decision to hold the vote on 25th of September this year is unwavering, Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani stated Thursday.

Today the EU Ambassador to Iraq Patrick Simonnet and Barzani had discussions over the latest political developments in the region and especially over the referendum of Kurdistan, according to a report posted on the official page of Kurdistan presidency.

Barzani noted that due to countless violations against the partnership, consensus and the constitution, the people of Kurdistan have reached a deadlock with Baghdad administration and have turned to referendum as a legitimate choice which is not contrary to any contemporary democratic and human principles.

In the meeting, Simonnet stated the EU understands the rights and demands of the people of Kurdistan and backs continuous talks between Baghdad and Erbil over the vote.

He also noted that the EU will support any agreement the Iraqi government and Kurdistan Region will reach to resolve the difference over the referendum.
Also today Barzani met with the British and German ambassadors in Erbil and reiterated Erbil's stance on holding the independence referendum on time has not changed.

British Ambassador to Iraq, Frank Baker, posted on his official twitter account that he had “constructive discussions” with Kurdistan president about the referendum.
