Key District Liberated From IS in Tel Afar






Iraqi armed forces announce on Tuesday the liberation of a key district in the northern city of Tel Afar from the clutch of the Islamic State (IS).Al-Nour neighbourhood was recaptured after fierce confrontations between pro-government Shi’ite Arab militia groups of Hashd al-Shaabi and IS jihadists.

The Iraqi army previously stated that counter-terrorism units had entered south-western Kifah district earlier the day.


The battle for liberating Tel Afar was launched on Sunday by Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi who said in a televised statement that the IS insurgents have an option only between “surrender or die”.


Tel Afar, a predominantly Turkmen town located some 65 kilometres west of Mosul, has been under the control of IS since mid-2014.
