Iraq wants to reopen an old Saudi oil pipeline

Former Iraqi oil minister Ibrahim Bahr al-Ulum has said it was necessary to restore an old pipeline used to export Iraqi oil through Saudi territory, Al-Hayat newspaper reported on Thursday.
He added that he expected that there would be “a positive response from Saudi Arabia in this regard that the political atmosphere is appropriate and there is great rapprochement between the two governments”, two major producers of oil in the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
Iraq’s current oil minister, Jabbar al-Luaibi, is on an official visit to Saudi Arabia and is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Saudi Energy Minister Khalid al-Falih on Thursday.
The Iraqi pipeline in Saudi Arabia has not transported Iraqi oil since Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in 1990. Saudi Arabia seized the pipeline in 2001 as compensation for Baghdad’s debts.
The Iraqi pipeline was used by Saudi Arabia to transport gas to power plants in the west for years before testing its opening in 2012, giving Saudi Arabia room to export more of its oil if Iran tried to close the Strait of Hormuz.
