Iranian Foreign Ministry: Kurdistan referendum a disaster for Iraq and the region
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Jawad Zarif, said he was convinced that joint efforts with Saudi Arabia were possible to resolve regional crises.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said that the referendum on the independence of Iraqi Kurdistan is wrong and its repercussions will be disastrous for the security of Iraq and the region.

"Despite the differences between Iran and Saudi Arabia on Yemen and Syria, it is still possible to work together to put an end to these situations," Zarif said in a speech at the high-level political forum on sustainable development in New York.

Zarif pointed out that the Iraqi Kurds' referendum on independence was the "wrong choice" and "its impact on security would be catastrophic.

On Syria, Zarif said his country had serious doubts about US reports on the use of chemical weapons in Syria in Khan Sheikhan and said: "It can be verified."

Zarif stressed that he did not rule out the possibility of talks with his US counterpart Rex Tillerson on the implementation of the agreement of his country's nuclear program.

The Iranian foreign minister said that so far he had not spoken with the representative of US President Donald Trump.

"There are no contacts now between me and Secretary of State Tillerson, but that does not mean it can not be"

The Iranian foreign minister advised the United States to reconsider its approach to sanctions and "put in its head that the pressure approach does not work."

"Sanctions will not yield results, so Washington's leaders should pay attention to this," Zarif said.
