President Barzani congratulates Abadi, Iraqi people for Mosul liberation

The President of the Kurdistan Region Masoud Barzani on Monday congratulated the Prime Minister of Iraq for the liberation of Mosul and praised the military coordination between Peshmerga and Iraqi forces.

In a phone call, President Barzani congratulated Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi on “the great victory” that has been achieved in the Mosul battle.

“The victory is the result of the cooperation and sacrifices made by Kurdistan Peshmerga and the Iraqi army,” the Kurdistan Region Presidency (KRP) statement read.

The Kurdish President also congratulated the people of the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.

“This victory has been made possible by the blood of youths from both sides,” President Barzani stated.

In another part of the conversation, both leaders emphasized the continuous cooperation between Erbil and Baghdad in countering terrorism in the country.

On Sunday, Abadi visited Mosul and congratulated Iraqi forces commanders as the Islamic State (IS) caliphate reaches its end in the city.

A few streets remain under the control of the militant group in the west of Mosul which will be liberated in the coming days, according to the Iraqi commanders.

Mosul is the second-largest city located in the north of Iraq which IS occupied in June 2014.

The full liberation of the city draws near after over eight months of fierce clashes.
