Arab Diplomats Ask Barzani to Enlighten Them over Future of Mosul

The consul generals of seven Arab and North African countries asked Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani to give them greater understanding over the situation in Mosul and the future of the war-ravaged Iraqi city, according to a report on Kurdistan presidency’s official page.

The diplomats from Palestine, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Jordan, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates met Barzani in his office in Erbil on Tuesday.

They expressed their appreciation for the victories by the Kurdistan Peshmerga forces against Islamic State (IS) organization and their “decisive” role in the offensive to liberate Mosul.

At the same time, the delegation also thanked people of Kurdistan and its administration who welcome, assist and safeguard a great number of IDPs and refugees despite the difficult war and crises they experience.

Responding to the demand by Arab diplomats, Barzani expanded on the Kurdistan Region efforts for designing a political and administrative strategy for Nineveh with the Iraqi and the US sides before and after launching the major operation to free the province.

President Barzani stated the efforts were not considered in the same manner a suggestion to form a supreme committee to finalize the strategy was not put into work.

Now the initial signs of the problem become apparent, he added.

Barzani stressed for the future administration of Nineveh, the demands of peoples of the province should be considered so as to ensure them about their safety and prevent the repetition of the catastrophes which were inflicted upon them.

In another part of their discussion, Barzani touched on the coordination among the Iraqi army, Peshmerga and the international coalition forces which has made Mosul battle come close to its end, adding, however, this should not be interpreted as the end of IS.

As long as the factors giving rise to IS are present, IS will recur, maybe under different names, and get reinforced, Kurdistan president reiterated.

The participants to the meeting also deliberated on the independence referendum of Kurdistan Region (due on September 25, 2017) and voiced their understanding for the struggle, sacrifices and appeals of the Kurdistan people.
