Iraqi Forces Kill at Least 79 IS Militants in Mosul's Old City

Iraqi forces killed at least 79 Islamic State (IS) militants on Sunday, as part of the ongoing military operation against the extremist group in western Mosul, Federal Police official said.

Lieutenant General Raid Shakir Jaidat of the Iraqi Federal Police told reporters that the Iraqi forces, assisted by local civilians, detained dozens of IS militants, who tried to flee the areas of Mosul's Old City, pretending to be internally displaced persons (IDPs).

The federal police official further added that the Old City is expected to be fully liberated within hours, as the Iraqi forces are advancing towards recapturing the last pockets held by IS.

Earlier this week, the Iraqi Prime Minister, Haider al-Abadi, announced the defeat of the extremist group in the city of Mosul. The city was captured by the IS insurgents back in 2014 when the group first emerged in Iraq. However, since October 2016, the Iraqi forces backed by the US-led coalition have been engaged in an operation against the group.
