KDP MP: Kurdistan is 'already' independent from Iraq

Kurdistan region is 'already' independent from Baghdad's central government, Parliamentary member from Kurdish Democratic Party (KDP) Najeiba Najeib said on Sunday.

Kurdistan is financially, economically, politically and militarily independent from Iraq, Najeib added.

Najeib asserted that Kurdistan people must say their opinion on the matter of independence in the upcoming referendum.

She noted that the ground work for independence is present.

The regional government will negotiate, discuss the necessary steps of independence with Baghdad and the international community, Najeib further added.

The Kurdish parties agreed on June 7th to hold the referendum on September 25th and the elections on November 6th.

Iran, Turkey, the United States, Russia, the United Nations, Germany and Baghdad had earlier declared their refusal to hold a referendum on the independence of Kurdistan. They consider the move "a threat to the unity of Iraq".

"The United Nations has announced its position on this referendum and it will not participate without the approval of Baghdad," Prime Minister Haider Abadi said, considering the referendum illegal.

The federal government will not support the referendum or finance it or participate in it," Abadi said.

The referendum is not binding for the region's independence, but for knowing the opinion of the Kurdish people, Abadi added.
