Iraqi PM Announces End of Islamic Caliphate

ERBIL—
Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi stated on Thursday that the Islamic State (IS) caliphate has ended, after Iraqi forces controlled a symbolic mosque and minaret in the Old City of Mosul.

"The return of al-Nuri Mosque and al-Hadba minaret to the fold of the nation marks the end of the Daesh state of falsehood," Abadi said in a statement, as he referred to IS by its Arabic acronym.
Three years ago, IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi declared its Islamic caliphate in Nuri Mosque which is also the central mosque of Mosul.
Iraqi premier also promised the Iraqi forces will keep chasing the Islamic militants to kill them or force them surrender.
Iraqi army commander say only a few days are left for the full liberation of Mosul from IS. It has been more than eight months that the forces, backed by international coalition airstrikes, strive to retake the city form the militants.
