IS in Control of Only 1% of Mosul

Islamic State (IS) militants have lost the majority of territories they once held in Mosul, and they are now in control of only 1% of the major city in northern Iraq, said the commander of joint forces in a statement on Sunday.

The Iraqi forces continue advancing deeper into the remaining IS-held areas, and there are strong possibilities to fully liberate the strategic al-Shifa neighbourhood in the upcoming days, the statement said.

BasNews earlier reported that the government troops managed to block a wave of IS suicide bombers near the Old City of Mosul where also fierce fightings continue.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said earlier this week that the final defeat of IS is imminent, and commanders believe it is to happen in days.
