Opening Armenian Consulate in Erbil Would Be “Important Step”: Scholar


The decision to inaugurate an Armenian consulate general in Erbil is of significant importance which is expected to further expand the ties between Kurdistan Region and Armenia, said Vahram Petrosyan, head of the department of international relations and diplomacy at the Yerevan State University (YSU).


“The discussions on opening an Armenian Consulate in Iraq’s Erbil were being held for a long period of time. The opening of the consulate is a principled decision, it will significantly contribute to the development of relations between Armenia and the Kurdistan Regional Government,” Petrosyan told a press conference in Armenpress.


“The Kurdistan Regional Government considers Armenia in the regional context. Moreover, it also attaches importance to the economic factors,” he noted, explaining that Erbil hopes that more investors from Armenia flow to the Kurdish region and contribute to the development of Kurdistan.


“They also attach importance to healthcare field, they search for cooperation ways in agriculture sector. They outline cooperation in education sphere, thousands of Kurds are ready to come to Armenia to study.”
