Mosul: 14 IS Militants Killed, 70% of Shifa Neighbourhood Retaken

The Iraqi security forces have taken control of at least 70% of Shifa neighbourhood within the Old City district, the last Islamic State (IS)-held area in west Mosul, said a police source.

Captain Ahmed al-Obeidi, an officer from the Iraqi federal police, told BasNews on Saturday that violent clashes between the federal security forces and IS militants in the streets and alleys of Shifa neighbourhood resulted in the death of 14 militants.

"The federal forces managed during the ongoing clashes in the district of Shifa to kill 14 IS militants, including suicide bombers, said al-Obeidi, adding ”at least 70% of the area has been liberated."

He said "the security forces have besieged the IS insurgents in the streets of the Old City and arrested a number of them and transferred them to the headquarters of the Rapid Response Forces for investigations."

He continued by adding “IS militants in Shifa neighbourhood have begun to retreat towards the neighbouring Faruq area amid the gains the federal police are making in the neighbourhood."
