Iraq expects to reduce its wheat production by 7.3%

The Iraqi Ministry of Planning expected Tuesday a 7.3 percent drop in wheat output from last season’s output.
The ministry’s spokesman Abdul Zahra al-Hindawi said in a statement that the expected production of wheat crop for the winter season 2017 is estimated at 2829 thousand tons, down by 7.3 percent from the actual production of the last season of the provinces covered.
He added that “the highest output is expected to achieve is in the province of Wasit, where estimated 617 thousand tons by 21.8% of total production and the lowest expected production is achieved in the province of Karbala, estimated 33 thousand tons by 1.2% of the total output of the provinces.
Hindawi said that “the total area cultivated for the provinces covered with wheat crop estimated at 3595 thousand acres for the winter season 2017, down by 2.8% compared to last season, where it was estimated 3697 thousand acres,” adding that “Wasit province was the top in terms of area planted with wheat Followed by the provinces of Diyala and Qadissiyah. ”
He added that “the expected production of 303 thousand tons of barley amounted to the winter season 2017, down 39.3% from the actual production of the last season for the provinces covered by the estimated 499 thousand tons,” adding that “the highest production is expected to achieve is in the province of Qadisiyah, where 91 Tons of 30.0% of Iraq’s production. The lowest expected production is in Basra, where 0.4 thousand tons were estimated at 0.1% of Iraq’s production.
Al-Hindawi said that the total area cultivated for the provinces covered by the barley crop was estimated at 713,000 dunums for the 2017 winter season, a decrease of 32.9% compared to last year, reaching 1062 thousand dunums.
