Iraqi Forces Pushing into Last IS Stronghold in Mosul

An officer from Nineveh Police reported on Monday that security forces stormed into Bab Sinjar area of the Old City, the Islamic State (IS) last stronghold in Mosul.

"The federal police forces entered Bab Sinjar popular market on Monday where they are engaged in violent clashes with the IS militants," Captain Adel Haider, from Nineveh Police, told BasNews.

The security forces have fully surrounded the market and began to penetrate in order to retake control of the area, adding that the security forces killed about 23 militants, including suicide bombers.

He noted that the troops discovered four empty prisons belonging to the militant group across the market.

"The forces will be pushing deeper into the market with aerial support from the Iraqi Air Force,” the official said.

The Old City district is the last IS-held area in Mosul, once it is retaken, the liberation of the entire city will be declared.
